Corpus Christi

As we Victorians endure another lockdown, let us take this opportunity to pause and reflect on the feast of Corpus Christi as instituted to focus special attention on the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It is a celebration of the generosity of the Lord to us, in offering himself as food to satisfy our spiritual and material hunger as we journey through life. Let us consider the great miracle of God's presence among us. All of us are people on a journey facing the trials and sufferings of everyday happenings. What better companion can we have for support than the presence of Jesus?

When we gather back at the Lord's table, our union with him in the Eucharist means to get closer to our brothers and sisters of our community. This is the acid test of our belief. In our daily life we are asked to forgive, to overlook weaknesses, to understand failure and not to close our hearts when we are hurt. In the Eucharist we bring to it all the possibilities, desires and longings of our existence. To have time for God and to give ourselves to him is an important expression of our faith. Next month our children who are being prepared for their first holy communion shall join us. A time to remember our first holy communion too. We come to realise that we are being drawn into a deeper relationship with Jesus and also with the community. This becomes not just a personal experience, it becomes a family experience because our children draw life from the environment in which they live; the family and the Catholic community are the basic sources of that life.

Stay safe and healthy.
